tHE SHELL SANCTUARY

“SHELL AND SHELL”, Borders Project, between Austria and Germany

A functioning model for a community space.   Installed in various locations, this iteration on the German and Austrian border, "Shell & Shell"  served in an ambassadorial capacity, facilitating a cultural exchange between two communities adjacent to the Zalzaach River.  The work was created locally forging relationships and collaborations with local businesses and manufacturers, government agencies, local arts organizations, galleries, artists in all disciplines, and community groups.  

“SANCTUARY”, McCarren Park

"Shell Sanctuary" in its first presentation as part of the 1998 Environmental Festival in McCarren Park.  The Sanctuary serves as a community hub for various activities, including brainstorming issues and reforms for the NorthBrooklyn community.   These included the 97A Waterfront Plan; Greenpoint oil spill; Street ends and piers; the sewage treatment plant; open space and parks (all waterfront land was fenced off); boating and canoeing on the water; Newtown Creek cleanup; transportation and storage of radioactive material in the neighborhood; and much more.   Since that time all of these areas have either been dealt with or they are in the process of remediation
